THE OPEN GATE
The Story of Ojalá Niños, a Creative Community for Otomi Families in San Miguel Viejo, Mexico
When Elsmarie Norby moved to the rural indigenous community of San Miguel Viejo nestled in the valleys of Central Mexico, she built a modest house intending to live a simple, quiet life. But then the children appeared at her gate—and with them, a new mission. “The Open Gate” tells the story of the birth of Ojalá Niños, a creative community for Otomí families and those who are called to serve them. Beautifully designed, this bilingual coffee-table book shares the author’s cherished recollections through her penned words and photographic lens, with a brief history of the cultural heritage of the Otomí people by local historian Jose Arturo Morales Tirado. All proceeds benefit Ojalá Niños.
